Enabling macros across the network

I have have excel spreadsheets on my server (ICT subject resources) and they all come up with high security so macros are disabled.

 

I can change it back as admin, but it doesnt stay so presumably there is a setting somewhere else which resets the security level to high when you log off and on again

 

Can anyone help - there are a lot of spreadsheets!

Thanks for that - unfortunately I dont understand where it says 'install template whatever'

Are you on a vanilla network or ?

Working on the presumption you are using a vanilla network, you need to install ORK tools on your main server, usually the Curriculum server where Active Directory is running.

 

This will then install/copy the Office ADM template files to the C:\Windows\INF or C:\WinNT\INF directory where existing ADM template files are stored.

 

Open up Active Directory and navigate to the OU where your pupils account objects are located. Now this next step will look different depending if you have GPMC installed (which as a recommendation you should). If it doesn't look as I am describing things, skip the next paragraph.

 

Right click the Curriculum or equivalent OU, choose 'Properties', then choose the 'Group Policy' tab and click on 'Open'. You should then see a GPO listed. Right click it and choose 'Edit'.

 

Under the sub heading 'User Configuration', right click 'Administrative Templates' and choose 'Add/Remove Templates'. Add the relevant template, then click 'Close'. You can now tweak the policy or policies you require.

right - not going completely mad - I did manage the install as above and

I have done the template office11 install but when I look at the files I cannot find one called tools/macros or similar

I seem to have looked everywhere

What am I not doing now? *sigh*

The template you need to add is Word11.

The alternative is Mandatory Profiles.

 

Change ntuser.man to ntuser.dat

 

use a logon on that profile and enable macros

 

Logoff and let the profile save back to the server

 

rename ntuser.dat to ntuser,man

Yes you can do it this way, but GPO is better. Plus you have other various Office policies you can set. If you haven't used ORK tools before I'd recommend it

I did it Michael's way and it was really simple to do....just cant remember how i did it!! lol

I found the correct template - (but I chose Excel11 not Word11, is that not right?) and set the level to medium

The machines are still giving me the error message about the security level set too high

I'm sorry but I have definitely installed the ork tools and there doesnt seem to be a template for word11, only office11

 

If you logon to your server, open up My Computer > Local Disk (C: ) (it might be labelled something else), then double click either Windows or WinNT. Now double click the INF folder. There will be loads of files in here, but don't worry.

 

Click on Search > All files and folders, then in the top field enter *.adm and click Search. All the template files will/should be displayed. Does Word11 appear here?

I have found the Word11 template and set macros in that as well. Made sure the GP is applied to the right computers, done gpupdate /force /boot and the machines are still showing high level of security in all excel spreadsheets

What else can I do?

I seem to have sorted it. I had applied the gp to computers and not users

I don't understand why it didn't work when applied to computers - can someone tell me?

Because the excel/office settings are set per user, each settings stored in users profiles. (I think)

Some policies only work per user and others per computer, so applying per user policies to an OU which just has computer objects would not work.
