EduTech Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 Ok So now i feel like a noob! but i haven't really repaird windows vista/7 before from cmd. Anyhow, come back from work today turned on my laptop and it just comes up with "No Operating system found" Boot of a live CD and the installation is there.. fine so i havent lost anything I am presuming the MBC has corrupted or something... I have booted from my Win 7 Disc, managed to get to the command prompt.. does anyone know what commands i have to type in to fix this.. or at least atempt to.. i dont really want to format this machine! FN-GM Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 Can you not boot from the Disc and do a system restore like you can in Vista? PS: its your own fault for running an OS that is still being tested

I am slightly been won round by Vista its worrying me lol. I have noticed though since i have upgraded to Vista on my brothers two laptops they do seem more quick not sure why. Anyway sorry to hijack!
EduTech Posted March 30, 2009 Author Posted March 30, 2009 Yeah i think vista is fine for the general user, i think in a way i made the wrong choice of laptop as i use mine for work etc so i probably would of been better of with a Latitude or a Dell precision, as the Studio Series are mainly for home. Michael Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 I presume Windows 7 has a Recovery Console when booting off the disc? Try: fixmbr Also, if you type "help" it should give you a whole list of commands. Be interesting to see if Windows 7 has anything new. One feature which would be useful is accessing and editing the Registry which you currently cannot do from the Recovery Console!

"Help" and "?" dont seem to bring up anything RegEdit < brings up the registry editor so that is something new I tried bootrec.exe /RebuildBCD and it scans for windows installations and find 1 it ask's to add installation to boot list i press yes and it says "Element Not Found" James. mac_shinobi Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Just wondering does it give you a chance to press F6 or some other key to give you a chance to add drivers for the SATA hard drive or anything like that ? If you use a live disc to backup the data you want to keep and just do a fresh install ?
EduTech Posted March 31, 2009 Author Posted March 31, 2009 I am using build 7057 x64 and i dont really have any data on there apart from programmes, everything is stored on an external hard drive. i just did not want to have to re-image it. i think it will be time for maybe a restore cd this time round then hehe. It does give you the chance to install drivers for harddrives... i could try that i suppose.. i have done everything else i can think of.. every option it gives you is automated and i have tried all those all i have left now is a command prompt in which gives me more options !! If only it had some help
Jamo Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 As a last hope try chkdsk, its the last thing I can think. Either that or the disk boot sequence has changed, sounds like its not even seeing the MBR from the windows disk as you would get a NTLDR error usually with that. Have you tried using the Super Grub disk to try to see the bootloader for it?

It's a bugger wish i knew how it happend as well. owell i'll try looking at the boot.ini file and see if i can make sence of that Cheers James.
Jamo Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 The super grub disk is a boot disk based on linux but it allows you to boot from any of your hard drives without a boot loader. Tis very useful if you uninstall linux after you have grubbed your hard drive! Means you can get back into windows wihtout having to wait 3 hours for the vista disk to boot! Anyhow its on the Ultimate boot cd which also includes Cute Partition manager. The other thing i can think of is, is the partition still marked as active? Im not sure why it wouldn't be but its something to check.
