silver Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 Hi I am being told I have to sign the 'Responsible Internet Use' policy but as far as I can see, I cannot do my job if I do because of the following things on it: "I will only access the system with my own login and password provided" (obviously I need to log in as other people sometimes to sort out problems) And: " I will not access other people's files without their permission" (obviously I can, and do in order to move things, sort problems etc) And: " I will...ensure I do not knowingly visit any innapropriate websites" (sometimes I need to look at something to see if it needs filtering etc) What do I do? Has anyone got an example of something I can sign? Help: this is really urgent as I am worried that if I sign it but continue to do my job as I always have, I could get into big trouble Steven
BatchFile Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 (edited) Personally, I would write next to each one "except where necessary in the course of my duties", sign the bottom and write "subject to ammendments" below your signature. That should cover you. Edit: But it's pretty short sighted on the part of your manager not noticing that several items on the policy would prevent you doing your job! mb2k01 Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 Hi Silver, What is your position at the school? If you are the Network Manager (or similar) then I would have thought you had input in to the policy creation, and would be told to opt out of some of the terms. If you are a technician, you would need to make sure that the activities you mentioned are within the terms of your contract, and that your line manager makes a case to management that you (and the other appropriate members of your team) need to be exceptions.
elsiegee40 Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 As TonyRidal says, but possibly worded as "Except as required by SLT as part of my duties"... to make it quite clear that SLT would pull you up if you were unable to do these things. Also, double-check your job description. What does it say you have to do in the line of duties? Does it contradict the AUP? If so, show it to whoever wants you to sign.

I deal with EVERYTHING to do with a vanilla system from user creation to AD and group policy etc Policies have already been done as I haven't been here long

Discuss your job description and the requirements and the AUP. You are effectively the NM, even if this is not your job description (I'm in the same boat here... It's not my job title, although I do promote myself to NM occasionally to get rid of the worst pushy sales-people on the phone ) The point is that while you do need to this as part of your job, you should never be doing it without management permission. If they insist you ask every time before investigating personal storage, internet, etc... do so! They'll soon get the message and give you generic permission!

You might only be paid as a technician, and might only have that level of experience (possibly?), but you are essentially the only technically minded person there from your description. You are certainly the only person who has a good case for opting out. I'd definately recommend a conversation with the Headteacher. Out of interest, who is your line manager? Have they agreed with you on this, or do they not have an opinion?

Thankfully (although not from the security point of view!) we are just developing AU policies here and I've been involved in the process. If you don't feel you can talk to the head, write the amendments as suggested and sign it. Don't be pushed around!
mb2k01 Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 Haven't got a line manager!! Lol. Everyone has a Line Manager - they have to. What does your job description / contract of employment say? If you have never been introduced to one, then it will almost certainly be the Head. In which case, you're in a fantastic position as you can make them aware of the situation without having to go via anyone else. Go and knock on their door after reading this!

He knows very little about IT and obviously is incredibly busy with other things. I have cobbled together an amended policy and he is happy with it - what was worrying me was that I might have left something out. I have made sure that I can do pretty much anything with files on the computers or server so that should be OK

It is probably due to the fact you HT hasn't a clue what access you need to perform your job.
