Oh my god! How come I have not noticed SUN before!

I never thought to ever look at SUN as I always saw their hardware as being very very high end all with strange sounding extremely expensive 300Mhz RISC processors that only ran Unix, only universitys could afford, and only the most highly bearded geeks could use!

There's me looking at HP/Dell/etc for a new harware supplier to supply servers / SAN / etc and all of the time SUN is siting there with what looks to be an excellent range of Quad / 6 core Intel/AMD servers, some great SANs ranging from budget to bonkers money. Not only that but they also seem to do a crazily cheaply priced Core Quad Extreme workstation, and some rather well priced thin clients too!

Not only that - but they offer 60 day trials on everything from a £1000 workstation to a £40k SAN. What the heck!!! Never seen anything like that before!

Where have you been all my life SUN? Prices seem very keen to - I wonder if they do educational prices on top!!!!

:D:cool: *creates sun.com account*

Sun Fire X4450 Server - Overview

This looks nice :)

Get 4x Quad-Core Xeons in there along with 64GB RAM...Couple that with 4x Gigabit NICs and redundant power and you're laughing.

Plenty of PCI Express Expansion so give it a 10GB backbone connection there and HBA for the SAN and VMWare is ready to go...

(Wishes he could afford about four of them ;) )

Yes I was looking at that one. 4 x 6 core CPU's is going to be a winner, and list prices seem at least 10% cheaper than the Dell R900. Two of these, and a 7110 would do me!

Don't know where I am gonna get the money from though - but I figure if I have the plan constructed and costed then maybe the money can be found from somewhere.

Hmmm... what do I have?

  • 10x Sun Fire v20z
  • 2x Sun X2220 M2
  • 2x Sun X4440 (monster 4x quad Opteron with 32GB RAM each!)
  • 2x 7110 Storage
  • 1x Sun SL24 Tape Library

Sun kit kicks ass... all the current models have built in out of band management with remote KVMs plus it's all shiny. It may be slightly more expensive than HP but IMHO the kit is better built and some of the offers make it silly cheap.

I'm also intending to start buying Sun Rays... very cheap as far as terminals go. Admittedly I like to make things difficult so will use them as Citrix clients.

Sun also owns MySQL... what a piece of software!?! Heard of VirtualBox too.. that's Sun now!

The xVM Server and VDI stuff promises to be the proverbial dog's too.

None of the stuff is the cheapest kit arond but if you want cheap you'll buy Dell and it will fall apart! (in my experience)

Shop around and make sure you get education pricing (especially under matching grant) and you will not be dissapointed.

Oh... those 7110s are a breeze to set up too... 10 mins if you get interrupted.

If your after a phone system, Mitel integrate with Sun Ray too :D

The edu promo buy 1 get 1 free is running at the moment.

Last application date is the 20th May (done through us), with the last order date 20th March.

I know I am a Sun reseller, but I have to agree with Ric. Sun x86 servers rock. The lights out management kit on them is stunning. They are built like the proverbial brick outhouse and go like stabbed rats.
