Is it possible, wise or dowright foolish to apply Microsoft Windows updates to a CC3 server rather than the RM updates. I ask because our support contract with RM is coming to an end and school wants to save cost of renewing. Thanks in advance

We do not have RM Connect here, but i would have thought RM Updates include some Microsoft ones, and some for the RM Middleware, so what you going to when the bug is to do with the RM Software?

I support one RM CC3 network and have installed standard XP hotfixes on RM machines. RM simply re-package Microsoft hotfixes, supposedly test them for compliance then charge schools for it.

I've used the Logistix Post XP SP3 Update Pack (running it manually from a share) and it worked just fine.

Afaik, the MS updates RM supply generally just come as MS supply them, packaged in the C3 folder structure with an ini file which passes the relevant silent parameters for installation/uninstallation whent the package is allocated/deallocated in the RMMC. I suppose the only disadvantage would be if an MS update breaks an RM component (which would presumably result in RM leaving the update out, or updating their own component).

Also worth noting that some of the biggest CC3 failure stories are coming from people who decide to go about things their own way and start applying the patches/software etc directly from MS rather than from RM. Some will likely work fine. Others - for a good example try installing IE7 from MS, or even making your own package for it - will be a surefire way to murder your machine/server/network/all of the above.

Is there no option to take out a "light" support contract with RM? i.e. just access to the KB, updates and whatnot? Would probably save hassle in the long run, short of removing CC3 entirely.

Indeed.... I'd have thought a product such as CC3 will mean you are effectively locked in.... not buying support would be like running SIMS without the support of Capita!

And that's probably the best argument for continuation of the support contract especially when you consider the cost/size comparison.
