HP Procurve 4108GL

I have just started to really play with this thing and although I've setup most of it I would like to Create a Username and Password combo so I can use the web interface but I can't see how I do that?

 

Anyone else using a Procurve that could help?

Ive ordered one of these and am just waiting for it to arrive, so i would be interested in using the web interface to manage this!

If you plug it in, it should get an address via dhcp, it will show up in windows dhcp server without a host name. Then you can either telnet into that IP or

http://address

instead and configure its security settings from the web page. If you don't have it plugged in where it can get dhcp then you will need to connect via the console cable with something like hyperterminal.

 

When using the telnet interface, try 'menu' from the command line for a nice little config menu.

Ok telnet to it's ip addres that you've set via a terminal on the console port.

When logged into the 4108GL# prompt type menu

 

Goto to option 3 or press 3.

Pick the user you want to set the password for operator or manager.

 

Once one of these is set you can then access the web gui.

There isn't one, it takes you through a new user setup iirc.

The HP switches do NOT automagically get an IP by DHCP unless you to them to using the serial interface. Once you have done this, away you go... although I would recommend a static IP for switches.

Yup, my 2650s, 2626s, 2848 and 6108 did too.

I suppose it depends on the default factory settings whether or not they get their IP from BOOTP or DHCP or STATIC.

 

Thanks for that though managed to get the usernames and passwords sorted. My main concern now though is after a short period of time a second login box appears (Java Based) asks for my user and pass then it crashes the browser and the switch for 5 - 10 minutes this affects connection to the switch via TELNET, WEB or Procurve Manager but the switch is still working properly for every other function, any ideas?

Firmware update if it's not on current firmware as a start.

@DMcCoy & Norphy: I think it is a (relatively) recent change to some of the firmwares. I know the last 2 switches I bought definately didn't have DHCP set as the default.

have you downloaded HP toptools to monitor the performance of the 4108 as well as analsying traffic and useage?

The newest version of toptools or whatever it's called now that's supplied with new switches seems to have huge hardware requirements to run it.

 

Maybe better using some snmp software to monitor and log/graph etc...?

the new version is called pro curve manager and is available as freeby, but only the basic verison, top tools is legacy but still worthwhile
