Cheap wireless bridge

Moving back to my parents place soon for a few months and will obviously be using their internet. When I used to live there I had a cable running through the wall which I connected to another switch, since I had a few devices I needed wired for (xbox and media server). Since I moved out though my dad has filled in the hole (it was quite crude) so I need a wireless bridge this time

 

the off the shelf ones are a bit pricey though, roughly 40/50 quid for something Im not going to be using for long, so is there a cheaper option? Any way to use an old laptop to do it easily? Or flash an old router with alternate firmware?

Could buy an old bridge off fleabay but I need something that supports at least WPA and old ones may well not

Check around the pyramid of schools in your area. I picked up my D-Link WAP for a 'fiver' from a school that had given up on trying to get their wireless network working.

 

There is ALWAYS kit laying around not used, just a case of finding who has it!

I used 2 buffalo WAPs 5 years ago and got a solid 11Mbit between 2 floors of an old victorian terrace. Total cost then about £150, be cheaper these days I guess.

I currently use two BT HomeHubs 1.0 Yes i know but they do the job lol picked the pair up for about fiver for the pair on ebay...........trouble is, as i understand it a wireless bridge also called WDS by the HomeHub 1.0 will only support WEP on both Devices.

you can do it on your laptop, using a standard lan cable (some sites say you need a crossover but they lie).

 

just plug itin, fix ip of laptop, share connection, and manually set the sexbox up with the settings.
