SIMS - Student/Teacher View

I was at the ASCL conference last week and found that a large number of SIMS users weren't aware of the Student Teacher view. This view is very powerful in that it shows all aspects of a student that teachers are interested in.

 

You have to elect to have this view as the default through Tools|Setup|Student Teacher view. If you aren't using it I would recommend taking a look. The traffic lights for attendance, achievement, behaviour and assessment are set up globally by the system manager.

I showed it to a Deputy yesterday who was amazed and shocked she didn't know where to access it, because it showed the behaviour and achievement points we have just been testing out.

 

The fact that i demo'd it months ago was besides the point.

 

I'm going to make it default as soon as i've upgraded far enough to have the option.

Is it going to be mentioned at the various regional roadshows? I'll ask when I meet the local crew to make sure that it is around here.

Several people have asked about documentation. If you go to SupportNet on the right hand side there is a button marked Documentation. Search for resource number 14181 which is the Quick Reference Sheet (QRS) on this topic designed for teacher use. (Searching on QRS will bring up a complete list.)

 

QRSs can be freely copied in schools that have SIMS.

It's a very good screen - how I'd wish it would stretch to the size of your screen!!

 

Also if it was the default screen when you searched for students I think staff would welcome it; (instead of going into setups and defaulting it).

Kiran, I agree with both of your observations! The defaulting option for groups is coming this year.

I have pushed and pushed staff to use this but with little real effect. I have asked them to get used to the look and feel in readiness for the new Homepage. Some staff are going to have a real culture shock in the next few days, subject to the March Upgrade being released on time!

I like this view and have been pushing since last summer, starting to see the heads of year using it.

Main Issue with it is the assessment key indicator.

1. My Aspect names are too long so the grade only shows if you hover over, please could we be able to edit the name displaid.

2. It seems to show all the results (max last 3) of the 1st aspect in your list before moving to the next aspect.

If you don't use lesson monitor it shows attendance as (n) so you can not easily tell if a student is in school today or not - which would be useful.

The Quick Reference Sheet got send out as part of the "heads up" email for the March release to Suffolk schools. It wasn't done before as it does seems to eat computer resources. At this time of year people are looking at new workstations\servers or at least have some money to get extra RAM (or such).

 

It's just another simple thing, like Attendance 7, that people just need to sit there and try, unfortunately it's not aways possible so it's just a question of waiting till it becomes easier or your forced to use it.
