Graduates 'question City morals'

Disillusion with the world of finance is encouraging pupils who would have once chosen a City career to consider teaching, says a teachers' leader.

 

Dr John Dunford, of the Association of Schools and College Leaders, said young people were questioning the morality of making their fortune in the City.

 

He said teaching would soon become the "top destination" for bright graduates.

 

Last week the government announced plans for new teachers in England to train in six months rather than a year.

 

Are you ready for an influx of new teachers with 6 months training? Do you think teaching will be the No 1 destination for new graduates?

 

Personally I think it suspicious that moral values are only pulled out when the money & prospects have gone? Now that teaching looks likely to be over subscribed is it time to freeze/lower teaching salaries and either invest the money in new technology / equipment or lower taxes?

Well as long as it is the top destination for the best of the graduate crop no problem. If however we get all those that have gone into teaching because they can't find anything else to do it might be time to take cover / run for the hills.

 

Personally I think you should have 5 years of provable fulltime work (preferably in the industry of your chosen field) before you can train as a teacher.

 

Just a thought.

Of those 6 months:

 

1 month of college.

1 month of easing into school.

1 month of holidays.

Nah I don't think teaching is the choice for all. However it might be seen as a safe alternative for those who don't know what to do with themselves after graduating.

 

I am with the firm opinion of teahers working outside of education for a while first even its just as basic office admin. I have flirted with the idea of teaching for a while now but I don't think I am at the right age or experiance to do it. Perhaps in later life.
