computer screen goes black after windows logo displays

Recommended Posts

A Windows XP Pro system will display the Windows logo and then then the screen goes black and nothing else displays. Another monitor was tried and the same results. No new hardware or software was added to the system. A system restore, last known good configuration were done and the same issue happens. The computer will boot into safe mode and display. Any assistance offered would be greatly appreciated. Start Free Trial

Boot into VGA mode or safe mode by holding down F8 when the computer boots before you get to the Windows XP / Vista loading screen and picking it from the list. If it works then it is the driver, reset the resolution in VGA mode to something lower 800/600 then reboot and see if that works.

Synack uses a similar technique to what I use - Press F8, boot into VGA Mode, navigate to Device Manager and expand Display adapters.

In turn highlight each display adapter, then press the delete key, then reboot. Windows will then detect it as new hardware and re-install drivers automatically. Just tweak the resolution as appropriate as it'll be a nice 800 x 600 :)

Tried to boot it up in vga mode - comes up with black screen after windows logo

Remoted controlled via Dameware same problem

Logged on in safemode and changed the display setting but these won't save

Have deleted the display adapters as suggested and now have a blue screen after windows logo

Will try a bios upgrade next but would be grateful for any other suggestions

No, open the display adapter properties and replace the driver with a fresh one - preferably an updated driver from the manufacturer.
