[ubuntu] Log in to windows Domain

Ok smack my butt and call me stupid (here we go opens himself up for huge abuse)

 

We have a large number of cranky old workstations and I am considering going down the edubuntu route to keep them alive for a couple more years.

 

I have succeeded with likewsie-open to get the machines authenticated on the domain... however the next stage is driving me round the twist ... student login, mapping homedrives, shares and finally printers. I have searched about the net and found loads of helpful, but often conflicting methods.

 

So my questions are...

 

has anybody actually got this working successfully with Win 2003/2008 server?

has anybody got a simple howto?

Would anybody be willing to let me come see this in operation at your school (anywhere from Manchester upwards)?

The basic method consists of:

 

1) Installing Samba with Winbind

2) Configuring PAM to use Winbind as an authentication source

3) Installing and configuring pam_mount to mount student home directories on the fly.

 

Where are you getting stuck?

steps 2 and 3 appear to be the problem... I tried using a gui tool and all that happened was I could not login to the linux as local user.

 

Have you got a step by step guide to the whole process .. just point me to a weblink?

 

I ma assuming that once this is done on 1 workstation I can image it onto others or is it an individual station jobby?
