Warning: This is yet another noob question.

My children attend a very small parochial school in the U.S., and I volunteered to upgrade the school's website. Having heard good things about Joomla, I decided to do a search for school related templates and found EduGeek's free 1.5 template. Here is my noob question. Can membership be added to the template? What I mean is this. I would like to have sections of the site that are only accessible to teachers, other portions available to parents and the remainder of the site open to the public. From what I have seen of sites where the template has been utilized, this option is not available. Is that correct? If so, is there a way to add membership/login/registration?

Cheers

As far as I know this isn't possible with 1.5 but is being built into 1.6. In 1.5 there is no way to separate groups, they are either restricted or general users.

E107 is another CMS which does have the functionality you require though, is easy to install and probably easier to use than Joomla.

you can always create a folder that is protected and link to it from the Joomla template.

Thats what I've done at the school I worked at Link.

It looks as though you are restricting access via Apache. Is this correct?

As far as I am aware with the core Joomla you can only have non-registered and registered users, you wouldn't be able to have different groups for parents, teachers and pupils etc. You might find an extension to do what you want.

Jeffy it's a simple .htaccess by the looks of it to password protect to the directory.

Stewart - could you post a bit more info on what/how you've done this?

Edu-it is correct Si, it's a simple .htaccess file.

Create a folder. Add the .htaccess and .htpasswd file and you've protected the folder.

add any file you want protected to the folder, and you'll need a username and password to access it.

This may help. then again, it may not!

I'm also after a solution to this, so please share anything you find and I'll do likewise. There must be a decent user group extension out there, but unfortunately I'm yet to find it.

It just seems to be one of the few things that Joomla's missing but you'd find as standard in most other CMSs, like being able to post articles to more than one category. That one drives me up the wall...

I spent weeks researching this you can have 3 splits in your jooma enviroment so you can seperate into three groups but not more :(

I tried looking for extentions and some claim to do it but they lie! and I did find a way to hack Joomla (look it up) but decided it was far to brutal for purpose.

Moodle functions in a similar way to what you are after, could be used as an addition to the website plus the fact you are then implementing a new VLE, what could be better? :-)
