Looking for a home upgrade.

My current home pc is a 2ghz P4 housed in an RV80 case.

 

I'm looking to upgrade to something a but more powerfull but quite cheap so probably an amd based system.

 

Hopefully reusing the existing case.

 

2GB RAM.

120GB Hard drive.

Motherboard. -

CPU. - Sempron LE-1250 2.20GHz Processor

 

I don't do gaming so it's only basic office tasks and need space for my photos now I've got a digital slr.

 

Onboard video would be fine as well.

 

Any advice appreicated.

A cheap and easy option would be something based on AMD 780G. Depending on your budget, you could get:

 

Mobo - ASUS M3A78-EM 780G

CPU - AMD Athlon 64 X2 4850e or AMD Athlon X2 7750 Black Edition (Phenom derived) or a Phenom II should work if you wanted to go quad core in the future.

RAM - Corsair 4GB Kit - might as well go for 4GB now

 

They're all ebuyer links, but prices should be similar at any preferred supplier. Samsung Spinpoint 1TB is the best performing mechanical drive around currently, should have enough space for digital photography.

Its worth the extra t get a Athlon over a Sempron.

The smaller Spinpoint drive is two platters rather than three IIRC, so it has the same data density and similar performance - but it has half the cache. If you can afford the extra for the 1TB, go for it - and as stated you can't have too much space for working with RAW files - but the 640GB should be fine. As for performance of this system - I use a very similar setup for my work PC and it has never failed to impress, even with a 32bit OS.

I have a quad core CPU, 4 gigs of ram (with vista 64 which seems to work ok), a 512mb gt8800 and around 1.6 terrabytes of HD space.

 

Quad core processors are worth the money if you do anything but basic word processing & web. Lots of ram is great if you do anything in photoshop. If you don't then I would buy a discount laptop with the specs you provided. Since you have a DSLR then more memory and at least two Hard Disks are essential.

 

My setup cost me around £500 ish.
