  1. 1. Do you allow staff to view more internet sites than students?

    • No, students and staff both have the same level of internet filtering.

    • Yes, staff can view more sites than students. (Please include which sites in the main thread)

Our filtering is quite open, we block the usual, porn, hate speach, violence and any sites which prove to be a problem but we are generally reactive blocking only if nessisary.

Consistancy is a big thing as others have said, it also lowers the instance of certain soft headed teachers letting stuents use their accounts for additional access if they disagree with SMT decision with regard to some filtering.

Just to more explicitly state what I hinted at earlier today: you lot do realise this is a necro from over three years ago, right?

Does that mean that it is a topic which is no longer worthy of discussion?

Oh no, not what I'm trying to imply at all; just that answering OP's question may be a little irrelevant now, particularly as the resurrection began with an answer to that question rather than a "Just to come back to this topic..." - which is something I do all the time anyway.

It was more the fact that it was the second necro in one day that amused me, like some kind of Forum All Hallows' Eve, where the spirits of restless threads run free again :fear:

Cool. In that case, can we start discussing RM versus Vanilla please? :-)

We're even more liberal when it comes to filtering now. KS3 and 4 have porn/facebook/games blocked. KS5 & staff have only Porn/facebook blocked.

On users personal devices (On our guest wireless) we only have porn blocked. Facebook & other stuff is allowed. My logic is that if I blocked too heavily on guest wifi, they just wouldn't use it and in the case of phones, switch to 3g instead.

At least this way, we're logging their access & it may prove useful should any Child protection issues arise. Also, it's their personal devices, I don't care what they do with them.

Oh Vanilla all the way. RM have said CC4 support for Vista is a long way off and I'm interested in being an early adopter for Longhorn.

To be on topic, just so I'm contributing something better: staff definitely have more access, at the very least YouTube and iPlayer etc. We give our 6th form more access as well (personal webmail etc.) because as far as I'm concerned, time management is part of KS5; if you choose to waste your time that's your choice and a lesson you'll learn.

Not that I've ever learnt it, mind...

Ya, my reasoning behind it as well. If they want to waste their time, that's up to them. They should be mature enough to manage it.

Staff and pupils have similar access but the staff have the option to unfilter themselves on a per session basis.(logon.staffproxy) They each have their own username and password.

Staff want to access Grooveshark, youtube, webmail, facebook. I'd feel hypocritical if I didn't facilitate access.

Primary pupils - heavily restricted as you would expect

Year 7 & 8 - non-educational games are permitted, as are blogging sites; all other categories blocked

Year 9-11 - slightly more relaxed, to allow for research in PSHE, etc

Year 12 & 13 - Nasties, YouTube and social networks blocked

Primary Staff - as per Primary pupils, except with YouTube and social networks allowed

Secondary & Admin Staff - just the Nasties blocked, everything else available

Prep and Pre-Prep get quite heavy filtering

Yr 7-9 - No social or YouTube, heavy word filtering (drink, drugs, adult content etc)

Yr 10-11 - As above but allowed YouTube

Yr 12-13 - Blogs, YouTube allowed at all time, Facebook allowed between 8-10pm 7 days, word filtering otherwise

All staff - basic filtering, everything allowed basically.
