Any one use opendns? + Advice / Suggestions

Does anyone here use opendns?

 

I was thinking of using it at home but wondering, can my ISP be annoyed or something if I change the modem router wireless that I bought, to Easydns's DNS servers?

 

And can anyone give me advice on a modem router wireless, which is pretty good, fast, that has a blacklist that I can add entry's too and if possible (dont worry if not) that I can create custom error's, 404 - not found, etc and a custom "This site has been blocked page".

use whatever sevice you like for DNS I use open DNS with NTL your ISP couldn't care less how you resovle you internet addresses

 

you can use your host file on your (let me guess, teenage son?) computer and redirect http://www.xxx.com to BBC - Homepage

for instance this will map google to yahoo you need to find an ipadress for the destination address

216.109.118.69 http://www.google.com

Well I Know about the host file, but I got a couple computers, and I thought something on the wireless modem router and if any new connectors too.

What router do you currently have?

Most do filtering such as Sky BB's one where you can enter url's in the firewall rules to block access.

As for using opendns I use that at home and just manually set my pc to use it rather then the routers one (which defaults to the ISP dns)

ISP's wont care as it is not a bad thing.

The trouble with any kind of blacklist is keeping it up to date. I'd guess you could spend your evenings doing research surfing for porn in order to build a blacklist but it really will make you go blind :-)

lol well not planning on blocking everything, but if i know about it i can just block. Plus i dont think anyone use proxies in the house LOL

Your ISP may specify that you must use their supplied router. There's nothing stopping you adding a Smoothwall/IPCop box to your network though and that could do the filtering.

Don't if they still produce now since N wireless is top i think for wireless

 

and I bought the product myself not through my isp

 

Plus what prices for product we be on about for custom blacklist and no subscription costs (so one-off payment) + if possible i can create a custom 404,etc, and/or "this page has been block"?

OpenDNS offer some good free tools, but their claim that their DNS servers are faster than everyone else's, is simply not true in my experience.

 

By registering with them they offer good filtering tools (bearing in mind it's free), however (of course) with any form of DNS filtering, it can be bypassed by entering the IP of the website directly into IE. They've also started blocking sites which contain spyware, which is good to stop it on its travels

You can create custom OpenDNS "this page has been blocked" if you register on their site. It's highly recommended you manually specify OpenDNS servers on your router, but alternatively you could do this on Windows within Internet Protocol TCP/IP settings (on every machine).

 

As for routers I can recommend Netgear DG834G. I've installed some of these recently at two completely different customers and ISPs and both told me independently that their connections were much, much faster than the standard rubbish many ISPs use.

Hmm is this a netgear standard for for built blacklist? and dont understand why they sometimes include good feauters on they router but not include on modem router
