Disable RUN button on file download

Hi Guys,

 

I am running a windows 2003 network. Recently i realise that the students can download software and RUN it from Internet Explorer. Is there a way that i can remove or disable the RUN button that pops up when downloading a file?

It's probably not that they can run it from/through Intenet explorer, it's just that they are able to run software from the download folder c:\documents and settings\username\local\temp - or wherever it is.

 

If you have a software restriction policy you need to add this to the blocked list, or remove it from the allowed list. If you haven't got one then you should look into one.

 

Of course it could be they are downloading the exe files to somewhere where they are allowed to run exes from, say, c:\program files\myapp\... damnit, now I know I have to make sure they can't do this on my network now...

 

 

There is probably a way to disallow the exe MIME type within Internet Explorer, or at the very least make them open the file in winword, that'll them up a little.

Just block .exe files (and other executable files and scripts) at your proxy. If the file never gets to your network, it's a much better solution.
