Move DC from A to B

Ok here is the plan

 

I want to migrate my existing DC from Win2k3 x86 to a new DC running Win2008 x64

 

I would like it to keep the same name and IP address

 

What is the best way to do this?

Do a domain prep and forest prep

give your new DC a different IP address and name

Make it a DC on the domain.

Move the roles and other stuff over. - Transfer FSMO Roles from one DC to another

Take the old one offline.

Change the IP on the new server so it is the same as the old.

If you have more than one DC, just demote the one you want to replacemaking note of its name and IPs, remove from the domain. Format and install Server 2008 then do a DC Promo on that. Voilla

Last step, if you want to keep the name, rename the DC using NETDOM: Rename Windows Server 2008 Domain Controllers

We only have 1 DC

I've decided, for now, not to bother replacing it but creating a 2nd DC then look at bringing the 1st one down over a longish hol (easter or summer)
