Saw this in the local paper we are adding it to a newsletter going to staff next week highlights data protection in schools.

From what I have heard these are full reports and many schools will happily post these home to parents using Royal Mail, or just hand them directly to students (or siblings of ...)

 

If a member of staff gets into trouble for this then it could have serious repercussions on how reports are sent home. Can you imagine every school sending reports home as recorded delivery? Or telling parents to come in and collect them ... remembering to bring two pieces of ID, one must be a photo ID of some sort!

 

It does go to show that hard copies of data is just as easily lost as electronic copies though!

When it comes to it not matter what reports what it shows is how leaving 'just reports' in a shop can cause you whole load of mess. So what would happen if students sen details where left in the shop etc

 

Highlighting the article will help staff understand the need for the new guidance.

Just a note - these aren't normal school reports, they are IEPs which are slightly different AFAIK.

Yeap, they are plans that document special learning requirements, goals and plans for special needs children.

Ouch!... That's a serious breach. Thanks for the link... I think in most cases my staff are pretty good with things like this but perhaps this highlights a good way to lead staff into a greater understanding of security as one school I have, has the IEP data on the staff share space.

Something like this was always going to happen. There are still lots of people in schools who do not understand the importance of data security.

 

I still think most schools believe that data protection is for data held on computers!

 

The school is lucky that it is only in the local press.

 

Mind you if it was my childs IEP, I'd be pretty miffed!!

I recently walked past the main office in a school to find they have moved one of the three desks around. I could see one of the computers in plain view with Pheonix open showing a kids details.

 

I had a word with the person at the desk and she told me she'd hide any open pages when someone was in the main foyer.... I explained that this was in breach of all manner of security things but she laughed it off.

 

It's taken e-mails to the head teacher and the head of security to get the computer moved so it can't be seen

I had originally been told that they were ILPs (Individual Learning Plans) but yes ... they are IEPs and for them to be out of the school is a concern in itself!
