ITWombat Posted May 28, 2006 Posted May 28, 2006 Many times staff seem to be using email as instant messaging (IM) system. Has anoyone here implented a proper IM system using either MS Exchange Server 2000 or Live Communications Server? Do any of the Lnux schools use Jabber? Do you bother with logging?
ChrisH Posted May 28, 2006 Posted May 28, 2006 If you have exchange then it support a local windows messenger system.
Gatt Posted May 28, 2006 Posted May 28, 2006 ^^ Exchange 2003 doesnt - u need Live Communication Server
plexer Posted May 28, 2006 Posted May 28, 2006 What about wildfire im server and spark client from http://www.jivesoftware.org/ ? Ben
uk101man Posted May 28, 2006 Posted May 28, 2006 I've set up and used live communication server, it’s great. I would recommend it. You can use GPO to lock down messenger Tom
Gatt Posted May 28, 2006 Posted May 28, 2006 never used it, and got no reason to install it at work cos no way am i letting the kids loose on Messenger!!
fooby Posted May 28, 2006 Posted May 28, 2006 What about wildfire im server and spark client from http://www.jivesoftware.org/ ? Ben We use that here, well I do and the other ICT teachers. Never really deployed it site wide. Works fine as far as I have tested - LDAP authentication to AD server. Runs on a Win 2003 server with the spark clients on XP. fooby
plexer Posted May 28, 2006 Posted May 28, 2006 fooby: cool what do you find it's good for just chatting or for a better ict support response? I was wondering about using an xmpp server for a live help system. Ben
fooby Posted May 29, 2006 Posted May 29, 2006 Hmm don't know really. We were thinking of adding IM to all staff desktops. But really I don't want to provide and instant response - rather have a helpdesk website. Live help means live interruptions all day, mostly i'm there sorting the network I would rather the technicians do the IM however they are off fixing hardware issues elsewhere. I can see teacher to teacher it might be useful though. Having just the head of dept IM'ing me is bad enough..... 170 (ish) staff doing the same? nightmare. fooby
uk101man Posted May 29, 2006 Posted May 29, 2006 hench the busy, icon on messenger. All on the help side you can do the whole remote desktop sharing. tom
