In a moment of madness/stupidity I decided to use polish on my LCD screen. Probably not the wisest of moves! I've used it before and realised that it's no good so I don't know why I did it again. Hands engaged before brain I think.

 

Anyway, I think I've sort of got the screen looking alright again but I want to get some proper wipes.

 

What do you use/recommend? Where do you get them from?

I use the Safeclens Screen-Clene - either the spray or wipes - made by AF. We usually buy from Espo (don't ask why) but here's another supplier.

50% isopropyl alchohol + 50% distilled water along with a microfibre cloth is what the manufacturers seem to recommend and it is way cheaper than specialty wipes. Just explain your need to the local chemist and they can usually provide it in small quantities (500mls).

In the UK trying to buy ia will probably get you reported to the authorities as a suspected bomb maker!

I use iKlear on my displays and on my phones / iPhone / iPods. The secret is getting a decent polishing cloth that doesn't take too much of the protecting film it leaves behind, and also making sure you replace the cloth on a regular basis.

I have tried alsorts on my Sony X-Black TFTs at home to clean them and I am really struggling to get them so they are clean, smear free and fluff free Will give the IPA a try, got a bottle of it somewhere from Fibre Optical work

I use a 50/50 mix of IPA and cider vinegar to clear my ears after swimming. I buy the IPA from the chemist by the half litre. First time I went he asked why I wanted it but was happy when I showed him my school ID.

 

I might try the same mix on a knackered laptop screen to see how it works.

You do need to dilute it to 50% otherwise it can eat the anti glare coating but once diluted it is safe for lcds.

That's a useful tip - thanks, will give it a go some time. I always used Windolene or equivalent on CRTs and it doesn't seem to have caused any problems on the TFTs either.

 

Out of interest who's job is it in other schools to go around clearing mucky fingerprints off the screens? Our cleaners have difficulty doing more than waving the hoover in the general direction of the carpet, and don't touch the machines. (To be fair they don't have much time, although one does seem to spend more time texting people on her phone than cleaning). At the moment I go around cleaning the screens at the same time as removing dust from the inside of the case on about a termly basis.

Isopropyl alcohol is available from RS (and probably loads of other places that sell cleaning stuff) Part number 448-180 is a 2.5l can of it for £16.00; they also do 0.5l and 1l containers.

 

Can I be really pedantic and say that the "proper" name is isopropanol or (perhaps better because it's a bit more descriptive) propan-2-ol :-)

I thought the main concern was from solvent abuse. I still favour sodium chlorate for making bombs.
