Fibre optic cleaning

Is anyone using any kit to clean the fibre terminations, patch leads etc...?

Why would you want to? Really you have to be careful with them as you could make them worse than they are if badly cleaned. I only ever cleaned them with IP wipes if they got exposed to dirt but I had a trained pro on hand who could re-check them with a microscope for damage, if you get a tiny bit of dirt in it you have had it as you could scratch it like mad!

Ideally Fibre optic terminations should be cleaned annually. Moisture will naturally get between the terminated surfaces, as it does it can draw in microscopic dirt. Realistically you probably won't notice a difference.

Done that in the past, never had an issue.

On one site I have a 32 strand loop that runs between 5 cabinets

Thats 16 x Duplex LC connectors in and 16 Duplex LC out in each cabinet!

Thats 160 connections!

Cleaning all of them is not an option.

Therefore I purchased a Fluke Etherscope with all of the options which tests the fibers in about 30 seconds.

That way I only have to clean the links that might get a problem.

The only trouble is that it cost me £7k + VAT so I won't be lending it out to any of you....
