3ware raid

Hi guys,

 

I got a question before I got ahead with something. I am building a new backup server and have a 3ware 8 port backup controller for my 6 X Seagate 1.5tb hard disks. In the process of plugging in all these drives it seems like port 1 is faulty. It picks up port 0 fine just either picks up an unsupported drive or no drive at all on port 1. So I was going to skip using port 0 and 1 and use port 6 and 7 instead. Does that have any implications for the OS by not using port 0?

I was going to be setting it as Raid 5 and use a USB key to boot into a Linux Operating system(probably Gentoo).

No it wont matter, make sure you have the latest firmware on those drives especially if you are using them in a RAID array.

Test it now with another hdd, if the port is faulty RMA it now. Save yourself ALOT of trouble. If the raid controller is faulty it could get worst.

Yeah I agree with matt40k, I was assuming it was a second hand card or out of warranty.

Thanks. And your right Peter. It is an old card and out of warranty. Thats why I was just trying to find a way around it.

I suppose all that is left then is to try it and see.

It does sound like its faulty, but also (if the RAID card is old), it may not recognise a 1.5TB hard drive?

It isn't that old I don't think. But it is building the Raid as we speak. So only time will tell.
