Are there any Sharepoint Gurus out there?

As in, will come in for a day and give a talk to us (admin and tech on back end) and also to them (teachers on the user front).

 

There are loads out there for a sharepoint in a corporate environment but can't seem to find any that specialise in SLK etc.

 

I don't really have huge amounts of time to devote but we also need it up and running real soon...I have the book, a few 'how to' videos but would prefer hands on really....

You'd probably find two seperate days (one for setup/admin, one for training to teachers) would suit better.

 

Then you can have it setup and working as you like before showing teachers anything - you know you'll only confuse them if it changes between training and rollout.... :-)

In someways its good to see people using Sharepoint as I like it but in reality its more than sticking a disk in a server. Even Alex will tell you its about planning and costing. Installing sharepoint is the easy part. Will you require access out of the school. What are you going to use ISA? Will you want email? Then to take advantage of sharepoint it has to be exchange. Do you want IM and web conferencing then there is OCS. Are you connecting to an existing AD? All of this has to be planned. Then lets throw in SQL. So before you know it, to have something that functions you will require at least a couple of servers.

 

I haven't even got on to permissions and groups.

 

If you get it wrong from the start you will have to rebuild unfortunately there are a number out there that have made a few errors. Then along comes Capita to install their web parts and they can't because of fundamental mistakes in the initial config.

 

If I was to give one piece of advice build a test server first and get yourself on a sharepoint course.

I am about to go down this route and start from scratch. Was looking at setting up a few test virtual servers to play around with.

 

So what are these fundamental mistakes? has anyone documented them or created a How To to make it Capita compatible...?

We are always happy to help out schools with SharePoint installations. We have a MOSS 2007 installation running with SLK and Capita SLG2 web parts, serving 1800 students and 3000 parents.

 

Suggest having a look at the kraal - SharePoint Design, Web Parts, and ICT in the Online Education Community - where there is an e-book to help design a SharePoint portal in a school envorionment.
