Just now looking at Anti-Virus/Spam now, and was wondering if anyone would care to comment on how good this is with The Grid? Is there any sort of management of it and reporting possible? TheScarfedOne Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Weve got the SMTP feed to our Exchange 2007 box. Works ok - shed loads of spam still gets through (even with the grid SMTP filter, and Exchange's own spam filter on 6). Damn nuisance... will be investing in local spam filtering this year! Having said that, no viruses have made it through - so thats a plus. EDIT: As far as I know, there is no reporting -but I know some grid people read this so maybe they can correct me?? Its more geared for their (RMs) hosting. 1
FragglePete Posted January 31, 2009 Author Posted January 31, 2009 Hmmm, what I expected. Still investigating, trying to get prices for Sophos PureMessage for Exchange. We have Sophos provided free by our LEA, so trying to find out how much just to add to that will be. Pete

tom_newton Posted April 7, 2009 Posted April 7, 2009 If any of you folk are using our web filter, it can also act as an anti-spam SMTP gateway... we can licence the "mailshell" anti-spam technology, which is pretty sterling stuff when it comes to keeping the "new message from barclays" brigade out. If you can, I would always tend to go for the "gateway" solution unless your exchange box is not heavily loaded, as exchange can easily bog down (of course if you are quarantining spam earlier it will lighten the load) or, unless of course you can get it very cheap...

I got prices direct from sophos then bought through a partner/disty. I got a quote for abour £3300 to add 400 desktops to the 3 year agreement with our local LEA. Am asking for prices for Forefront as we're on the Schools Agreement. Frustrating, I'm ready to roll out this server and get it in use but the whole AV and Anti-Spam issue is holding me back from going live. I just haven't got a warm fuzzy feeling about it yet. Pete

gshaw Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 Our spam recieve rate has shot up from 80% to near enough 90% in the last week or so... dunno if it's maybe Conficker machines starting a spam spree or summat but Sophos has let most of it through, some users much worse than others and some very very dodgy image attachments Think I'm gonna go with Messagelabs, pricey but I've got faith in them to stop this junk once and for all, plus I just found out I can get a discount with our JISC membership on top
diggory Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 We have our smtp feed directed to webroot then via swgfl. It's cut down LOADs of the SPAM, we hardly get any now. Staff used to get 30+ a day before - made us wonder if swgfl did any filtering. It's about £1500 p.a. I think - which was cheaper than messagelabs when I looked YMMV I also have a linux box with ASSP setup on it, but that was for pre-webroot days and it hardly get anything to block now. ASSP is not hugely effective when all the traffic is coming from one source (i.e. the swgfl mail servers though) - pity as it's free. Does do URL checks - which is nifty though. 1
