repartition boot cd

whats the name of the linux based boot cd that you can use to repartition 2003 ntfs partitions.

 

the name escapes me and i cant find it on search...

Sorry for a bit of a thread hijack, but I'm just using Gparted for the first time: shrinking 37GB partition to 32GB (18GB in use) and creating new 5GB partition on the empty space. Taking hours. Is this normal?

I have found it can take a long time if the drive is heavily fragmented or you have a low spec machine.

Is there a function in Gparted to write a master boot record? We had trouble the other week were a load of second users PCs we have, had been erased with Blanco which writes a hardware info screen to the MBR. Being SATA drives I couldnt just put a windows/dos disc in and do fdisk /mbr. I tried a knoppix cd but couldnt find the relevant command.

Switch Bios to compatibility mode for the SATA, boot to the XP recovery console from CD, run fixmbr ?

Not all BIOS have compatability mode I have found.

You'd be stuck with the floppy drive SATA drivers during the XP boot but it should still work. Haven't found any that haven't myself but some of them have been oddly worded/described..

I slipstreamed the SATA driver into a copy of XP in the end and used the recovery console. I have a that disc ready now but would of liked my first idea which was knoppix using to GParted to work as that could see the drives.

I cant easily see how to do what I want to do:

 

I have 1 HD, 1x4gb partition with windows on it and 2x30gb partitions with nothing

 

I want to merge the windows 4gb with the first 30gb.

 

Is this possible?

PartedMagic is also good, Its slightly easier to use than the GParted liveCD (They are both based on the GParted tool though).

 

RabbieBurns if the 30GB partitions are empty then delete one and grow the 4GB partition into the empty space. Then you will have two partitions 34GB NTFS with your data and 30GB empty NTFS.
