How do you guys suggest managing groups that are created by (ex)pupils? Have you set up a HS network for the pupils to use?

 

example - big group of around 750 members, uses copyrighted school logo, discussion board has a topic on teachers with bad and insulting things being said. Also created by a Ex-pupil.

 

The way I would go about it would be create a account (using webmaster or something as its name), contact group creator and ask for the removal of said topic, and that he administors the boards more closely (suggesting he should make you a admin). If he refusses put in a copyright/invasion of privacy complaint.

Nothing the school can do really its upto facebook and the creator of the board.

 

Facebook will not let you takeover a board (quiet rightly)

 

This type of things is out of your hands and you can’t do anything about it really. Just report it to Facebook and leave it to them

Not trying to take the bored by force, but a majority of ex students are decent people and he may volunterly make the account a admin...... a mojority of youtube videos that feature teachers in get taken down, when i politly ask.

I would inform the head, and speak to the council legal department. I think something would be done about it pretty sharpish

You may be able to get them to removed the copyrighted material - but you've not really got a leg to stand on about what they're saying unless they're making accusations of illegal conduct etc. If they're just saying "Miss X stinks and is a crap teacher", then it's within their legal rights or free speech. Otherwise sites like RateMyTeacher would have been gone long ago.

The other way of targeting such groups is to have them removed as sites / groups involved with harrassment. If you can show that things on the group have then been used to harass school staff (eg a group of kids trying to intimidate a member of staff by chanting 'Miss Smith smells' in a class) then you could have a case.

In all reality the person or people who are running the board are likely to be reasonable? I agree you should go for a two pronged approach and firstly see if they are willing to ensure the site is well managed and fair. If they are unwilling to do this then you would have to put up with it unless the comments are abusive. If this is the case refer to previous cases and the possible consequeses including prosecution

 

There is evidence that Facebook does lock accounts in this way

 

 

I would start nicely and work up from there as long as what they are saying is abusive. If they just said Mr H was boring then you may have to live with it.
