RAID is a Redundant Array of Inexpensive disks, i.e. a collection of disks with (usually) some form of fault tolerance built in.

JBOD on the other hand is Just a Bunch Of Disks, and does not have fault tolerance built in. A JBOD enclosure can be attached as a disk to a RAID array however, in order to provide larger potential disk arrays with RAID fault tolerance.

JBOD combines drives into larger logical volumes. It provides no fault tolerance, nor does it provide any improvements in performance compared to the independent use of its constituent drives.

Raid Enables fault tolerance as the name suggests

JBOD is just disk spanning - making a group of separate drives appear as one drive. It provides no fault tolerance or performance benefits.

RAID, depending on which level, is fault tolerant between different drives/has performance benefits.

JBOD is basically pointless.

JBODs - Just a Bunch of Disks - is used in the HP NonStop environment. The HP NonStop environment is the old Tandem systems.

HP NonStop is used in the telcos, banks and where you want a database running 99.99999
