This article is reporting on Microsoft plannign to shed up to 17% of it's workforce, some 15000 employees, worldwide.

Sounds like that is down to the recession, but what effect do people think this could have, if any, on the developements of things like Windows 7 and the server products proposed for 2009/2010 release ?

Microsoft poised to announce job losses - Times Online

You'll find that the staff being laid off we ultimately be their contracting side, just as google dumped the majority of their contractors.

We'll just see less Marketing, Bug Fixing etc etc. I doubt timescales will be affected as these products are bound to produce more revenue.

What annoys me is the fact MS and Google lay off so many staff, but they only do this to keep their massive profits up.r

None. This is Microsoft using "the recession" as an excuse to ditch the bottom end of its workforce, all the non-gems it's hired over the years. Hopefully those kind of people wouldn't last long on a software development team anyway (Microsoft has at least got software development and mentoring pretty sorted by now), but if any did then getting rid of them will probably speed development up rather than slow it down.

But don't US tech companies get rid of the bottom end of their workforce every year anyway.....has microsoft been doing otherwise in recent years.

I do tend to agree with David and ahuxum's comments about contractors, wondering if these rumours and blog stories are actually a case of much ado about nothing. Might aswell be, US tech giant clears out dead wood and contractors.

No doubt the UK (as is always the case with global companies) will be the worst hit. And they will be able to spread the workload to other employess through fear of losing their job.
