Making Media player classic the Default for DVD

Recommended Posts

I need a reg hack to make DVDs open in MPC rather than Win MP. I have tried a few of googles solutions but they dont seem to work. I even ran regmon while doing it manually, but I couldnt figure out which key it was.

Any ideas?

I did it on the mandatory profile, do you use those at all?

Something like this might do the trick otherwise...

http://www.the-pc-guru.com/How_to_add_an_AutoPlay_actio.php

Dig around there and it seems to list the available actions and where they point to, just a matter of finding out how to set the right one to be default, compare a standard machine with one that's got Media Player Classic set up as you want it?

I dont use mandatory profiles but I do have a default profile in the netlogon share I can alter. Might be a good idea actually as it needs a little tidying up.

So I am assuming there is a per user setting for this then? As everything I have seen points to per computer settings.

I'll try another user account that's not on the profile and see if the setting stays the same...

Edit: typical, the office PC I use for testing is an odd spec compared to the other machines so autoplay doesn't even apply, see below for why :p Might give it a try tomorrow on a SmartBoard PC where DVDs definitely autoplay...

The other odd thing I found was that it also locks onto the drive as well, profile made on one PC with say a Sony DVD drive didn't autoplay on another box with same drive letter but different brand drive

The Registry change needed is in HKCR\DVD\Shell\Play\Command and in default Reg_sZ add

C:\Program Files\Media Player Classic\mplayerc.exe %1 /dvd

Added msi i made installs mpc to C:\Program Files\Media Player Classic and adds the above registry key too.

mediaplayerclassic.zip

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Media

is there any option(s) within MPC to alter the default file associations or anything like that to set it as default ?

The mplayerc.ini file is created when you set the default file associations if you deploy this to the same folder as MPC it will pick up the settings too.

Thanks for that. just one thing to note though. The snapshot path in the ini is hard coded to one of your servers. Probably not something most people will use but may be worth changing.

thanks i wouldnt of spotted that one, i have altered the msi accordingly and reuploaded.

It was an old server anyway that is no longer in use, but it may of messed something else up for others.
