Hi Guys

Stupid question time:

I need to reset an admin password NOW and the only password cracker I can get to is Trinity Rescue (rest are blocked)

Now, I am not very bright today and I really don't understand what I have to do to reset the local admin password

The machine boots fine from the disc but then I am completly at a loss as to what to do next

PLEASE can someone help me ASAP - with instructions containing words of one syllable if possible

Boot the machine using this disk and you should be able to find the bit on how to reset the local password easily enough.

I've not used it, but it looks like a mandrake boot cd, which i assume would use winpass to reset the password?

 

Winpass says thus:

By default it will reset the builtin administrator account of a locally installed Windows, but you can specify other accounts as well at the commandline. In fact, you can add any parameter from chntpw which will be parsed to the commandline. So winpass –l will list you all usernames found in the SAM. Should you have troubles that metacharacters are present in the username (like the Ø or something), you can still use the HEX reference to the username listed next to it. Be sure to prepend that with a '0x'. More info on that can be found in the manual of chntpw. Watch out with disabling syskey! Most of the time you don 't need to disable syskey. It removes strong password encryption, so all local passwords become invalid, since the hashes don 't correspond to the encryption algorythm anymore. This has been known to cause problems with Windows XP's product activation. Read the warning well!!!

you just boot the TRK CD/USB/PXE then run 'winpass' at the commandline.

it will automatically mount the NTFS partitions.

theres also utilities like regedit....

hmm, also it'll need to be a 'clean' NTFS partition (eg, been shut down cleanly)
