Burning DVD Movies

Hi Guys

 

I've never done this on a Mac, and I've been scratching my head for a while now and can't figure this out.

 

I've made a nice little movie in iMovie with some imported clips.

How do I then burn this onto a disc?

 

I've exported it once as a m4v file which to me seems useless, but i could be wrong. Currently exporting as a .mov file but it says that's going to take 150minutes

 

Is there an easy way to burn to a disc within iMovie or once I've exported it how do I then burn it to a disc and what format to I export it.

 

As far as I know the file just needs to be put onto the disc, not actually playable. But then I could be wrong about that to so if you could explain how to burn a playable and just files it would be great.

 

 

I think the only reason I'm confused is because the blank disc doesn't show up ANYWHERE. But I can assure you it does work...

You can Export to QuickTime under the Share menu. iMovie will give you some default compression settings (web, email cd-rom) or you can click expert settings and set your compression settings yourself - look on the web for info on codecs and settings. This will give you a QuickTime file you can then burn to CD/DVD, but you can't burn from within iMovie (at least not iMovie HD - might be different on '08).

 

Alternatively, you can export to iDVD which will make the movie play like a shop purchased DVD with a menu etc

thats what i did.. thing is when exporting it was estimated 170minutes

 

i wasnt prepared to wait that long!

Sometimes iMovie minutes can be misleading....What Mac/spec machine are you doing this on?

this years iMac G5 Intel 2.4 Core 2 Duo with 2GB of RAM

Depending on how long the movie is, this is a bit of a long time! Are you exporting to a local disk or over a network, and what compression settings are you using?

 

PS - it's not a G5
