MicrodigitUK Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 Has anybody got a NETGEAR's ProSafe™ Dual Band Light Wireless Access Point (WAGL102) working from a Aruba Networks controller? Is it possible because they are a quarter of the price of a Aruba Networks Dual Band Access Point (65AP) and look like they will do the same job. I just don’t want to waste money on one to find out that it will only work with the Netgear version of the Aruba controller. Anybody got both bits of kit so they could test it for me?

localzuk Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 I dont use it here, but I would be very surprised if it did work together! Both systems are proprietary, so interoperability of access points will be unlikely.

I think this is echoed by the fact no-one uses the Aruba controller but you can find enough topic here about RADIUS.

Both systems are proprietary, so interoperability of access points will be unlikely. Some time ago I'm sure that Aruba/Netgear announced that they would work together on some things. The only thing I can find now that vaguely refers to this is here - but it's not quite what's wanted. Many of the ProSafe Netgear APs are running Unix (I think it's FreeBSD but don't have one handy to check) so in theory could run whatever code you want

We are looking at buying an aruba wireless system soon for our site.

Cools Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 i know some people that have been testing the Netgear controller and have flashed it with Aruba FW to pre N. there still testing it.. to see how it works.. but there the same box.. just spray it Netgear Blue and stick a bag on it.

I have bitten the bullet and forked out £80 for a Netgear AP for testing with my Aruba 800 controller and the short answerer is it’s NOT going to work out of the box with an Aruba controller. But while doing so I did notice in the Aruba controller licensing section a bit that mentions a “Netgear AP” licence that is DISABLED. So I have contacted Aruba to see if I could purchase one of these licences. But was then told that they no longer sell the Netgear AP licence and they couldn’t give any reason for this but I suspect that it has something to do with the price difference in APs. This then got me thinking what if you downgrade and load the Netgear OEM Aruba OS onto the 800 controller and then upgrade it to the Aruba OS. Would this process change the “Netgear AP” licence to ENABLED? There is only one thing that concerns me about trying this and that is the fact that the Netgear OEM Aruba OS has been modified so that nobody has the enable password. So if I downgrade I am worried that I would effectively lock myself out of the controller stopping me from upgrading. So I now need the help of someone with a WFS709TP to try the standard Aruba password reset procedure and let me know if they can gain access to the enable CLI. Below is the reset instruction, this info was taken from the Aruba support website. This might not work on the OEM Netgear but it’s worth a try. Product and Software: This article applies to all Aruba controllers and ArubaOS versions. To restore the admin password on the controller, follow these steps: Log in from the console. Use "password" as the user name and use "forgetme!" as the password. Enable the mode password as "enable". In configuration mode, enter the ‘mgmt-user admin root’ command to reset the admin password. Re-login using the new admin password. In configuration mode, enter the ‘enable secret’ command to reset the enable mode password. For example: User: password Password: forgetme! (aruba) >enable Password: enable (aruba) #configure terminal Enter Configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z (aruba) (config) #mgmt-user admin root Password: Re-Type password: (aruba) (config) #exit (aruba) #exit (aruba) >exit User: admin Password: (aruba) >enable Password: enable (aruba) #configure terminal Enter Configuration commands, one per line. We are looking at buying an aruba wireless system soon for our site. Indeed. We used to use MS Radius and 802.11x. Now with Aruba we still use it, except we dont have to configure every seperate AP in it anymore, it just points to the Aruba box. It hugely simplifies deployment and management, thats the main reason for it, if anyone thinks its just a replacement for the built in MS tools they have totally got the wrong end of the stick.
