Never quite 'got' scarification although I have seen one massive celtic design across someones back that looked better than a tattoo would have. The PC symbols just look like he got too close to an overheating desktop!

The fact is most chav's couldn't spell scarification and its actually more of an 'alternative' fashion.

 

Which would include most young IT geeks.

Well, having coloured scars over most of my upper body, I probably wouldn't be too preturbed.

 

Fair enough, I've no issue with people not liking scars/tattoos/etc, but to call people who have them names doesn't seem very open minded or accepting

 

...especially for a sixties kid :-p

It's not a question of being out of touch with young people and being open minded it's a case of common sense prevailing after all, teenagers and young people are so easily influenced having been one myself many years ago I should know.

 

Are young people so bored with their lives that they have to find themselves by hurting themselves or showing how cool they are by defacing their bodies or is this just another craze like tattoos and piercings which will run it's course like Mods and rockers fighting on the beach at Brighton?

Why did you personally have done to your body what you had done?

What influenced you to do this?

If given the chance to undo what you have had done, would you?

It may help me to understand the young people of today a little better.

Personally my first tattoo was something I thought about for a long time.

 

I've always been a musician, bass being my first instrument, and decided I wanted a bass clef on my shoulder. To declare my love for it/cause the symbols actually a nice shape/whatever.

 

I liked the experience. The tattooist is someone I've gigged with before, a real nice guy. We chat and laugh with the whole shop while its being done, and the pains not actually all that much. Its more of a constant buzz than a painful stab.

 

After that I started thinking about more, before taking the plunge. I don't regret any of them. I've designed all of mine - put some real work into them, and I normally get complemented on them. They all mean something to me, or relate to my hobbies/beliefs

 

To be honest, I don't get much done anymore (2 sessions a year?) but its all fitting nicely. I don't think I'd be me without them now.

Scarification done right can look amazing, and to me it seems more 'natural' than a tattoo as you are simply using the bodys own healing mechanism to make the design - there are no inks or additions (although am I right in understanding that people are encouraged to put an irritant on it to 'improve' the scarring?). If I was going to have body art and was brave enough to cope with the pain I'd probably choose scarification over tattooing. Although the usual caveats apply re: location as scar tissue is less elastic than 'normal' skin so once it's stretched out, it's like that permanently. But I'm a total chicken so my fear of pain and needles far outweighs my desire for body art. Infection is a worry too I think - necrotising fasciitis in particular. What people choose to put on their bodies is up to them - we all have scars with stories and I imagine scarification is no different. Personally I'd probably choose a stylistic dragonfly or phoenix design although Mandie Manzano has done some gorgeous Disney Princess Ribbon art that might look great as a tattoo/scar. Her stained glass windows look amazing as tattoos. As long as it means something to you then thats the important thing.
