gshaw Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Not sure if this applies to anyone here but we've got outcentres that need to remotely access our MIS system; currently this is done via MS VPN. We have an ADSL connection and IPCop firewall box at each centre then a domained PC where you logon via dialup connection at the logon screen. This works fine, if slowly on the old ADSL lines (512kb in one place ) but recently another centre asked about using logmein.com. Something just makes me think that isn't a good idea, security of data etc going through 3rd party etc, any thoughts \ suggestions?
apeo Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Why would you want another solution when you already have one... Surely if it aint broke.. dont fix it... Cant really see how it would be better to use logmein.
gshaw Posted November 25, 2008 Author Posted November 25, 2008 Only for reason of cost e.g. ADSL line etc but it's more the privacy issues I'm thinking about... something tells me it's better with a connection under our control than going via 3rd party sites...
bossman Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 I think and I may be wrong but you may be able to purchase their software for your own use i.e. host the service yourself and push out clients bit like vnc ok let me know if i am wrong ok
plexer Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Rather than having ipcop at the remote ends what about a ssl vpn at your end? Ben
gshaw Posted November 25, 2008 Author Posted November 25, 2008 If it involves money that could be a problem
richardp Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Hi if you are already using IPCOP then why not try using OPENVPN which is free and integrates into IPCOP. OPENVPN is an open source SSL VPN solution which if I remember correctly can be setup in either "site to site" or "roadwarrior" modes. I have tried it out in "roadwarrior" mode and it seemed to work really well, once setup it was much quicker to connect than MS VPN. Richard
Sylv3r Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 logmein is pretty secure, I wouldn't have any problems about using it for the use of SIMS data. It will be as secure as you are currently use as encryption etc is included. Logmein can be used as a free product or as a paid for service which will give you access to remote printing / file management etc.
gbaylis0 Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 LogMeIn is a secure remote access tool used by many companies supporting multiple clients. It requires a server installation (installs a windows service) and little config. The rest is done at their end. They go to a LogMeIn website and logon, and they have access to all of their client’s servers. It is essentially a group of VNC shortcuts... plus side, it bears no cost to you Have you considered using terminal services? Up to 5 admin users no need for additional licences.
