SIMS - Passwords

Anyone know how to force all teachers to change their password?

Or do i need to go thru them all manually and change them?

Looks like you have to do it one by one to me. But at least when it creates a passrod that must be changed on next logon it displays it on the name list.

Not as far I can tell. I think you'll just have to do it manually (go to each accout and reset password).

Its quite quick though if you double click on the user and hit reset.

Certainly not as boring as having to tick the boxes of all members of year 9 when I imported our PLASC file into a certain QCA related exam system :?

If you're into jack hammer vs peanut engineering solutions you could always write an AutoIt script.

 

Then again you can just swallow your pride and phone Capita. They may just have an SQL patch for this.

I'm forcing a password change cos apparently most teachers's pwd's are set to their dept (eg english / languages / maths etc) - and surprise surprise the kids have found this out!!

Not many people know this but there is actually a program for changing SIMS.net passwords. It's called DBPwdChg.exe. You can find it in the local application folder:

 

C:\Program Files\SIMS\SIMS .Net

LOL! Just been doing the very same over the last hour!!! Did you find the PLASC Utility did absolutely nothing at all? And of course, then you have to go through them all again setting their ILA.

 

Anyway, back on topic...

I didn't have to do any long-winded box ticking AFAIK. You can multiselect in their web pages with shift and/or ctrl though! For the ILA I did a csv, which was a bit annoying considering they were all set to the same number.

as far as im aware, its a manual thing, but when SYSMAN 7 comes out there may be some features in there.

When SIMS moves to SQL 2005 and system manager 6.90 in introduced then the passwords for SIMS .net will be stored in the master.mdf and not the SIMS.mdf. This will mean that by detaching and reattaching the database all the SIMS passwords will be changed, and reset to the 11 character password. This will change the sysman password but this can then be reset as required and the new list printed out.

Just to clarify, it will only reset the passwords if you migrate the database to another instance of SQL (eg on another server). If you simply detach and then re-attach your database on the same server and instance then all passwords will be intact.

 

This does raise the issue that if you obtain someone's mdf/ldf then you can attach to your own instance and access all data using a pretty standard username and password for most areas. ***Editted username and password*** - GrumbleDook
