When i try to use the Windows installer to install or remove any application i am getting this error message

"error 1325 Administrator is not a valid short name"

I have done abit of googling but not found much.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

At a guess, the installer service is trying to remove a folder called Administrator, but the MSI has told it that it's an 8.3 filename and so it borks. Usually a poorly written package.

Aside from a short file name issue, this error may also simply indicate an inability to locate a file.

MSI Error 1325 can occur as a red herring if a 2303 happens before it. Your log might look something like this:

MSI (s) (70:2C): Note: 1: 2303 2: 5 3: B:\

MSI (s) (70:2C): Note: 1: 1325 2: AspenTech Error 1325.AspenTech is not a valid short file name. MSI (s) (70:2C): Product: Aspen Icarus 2004 -- Error 1325.AspenTech is not a valid short file name.

In this case, look to error 2303

Windows Installer Error 2303

Error getting volume info. GetLastError: [2].

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This can occur if ROOTDRIVE or TARGETDIR holds the value of a a drive that the account installing does not have access. Or if the drive/location where the setup is being installed, is not accessable by the installing account.

ah ha sussed it, this saved the day Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

I came here today with the same problem. Unfortunately, the clean up utility didn't solve my problem. It requires MS Installer to be working, which is clearly is not working.

I found KB315346 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315346). My server is still in the final reboot stage. I've been trying to install a new NIC all day. Hopefully, this will solve my problem long enough to install some drivers for the NIC, so I can get back online.

I'll keep you posted.
