Edexcel Exambase Testing Software

Not sure yet whether it is my paranoid setup but this software needs an ActiveX control called Msinet.ocx which happily runs as Administrator but nobody else!

 

What's the best way to fix this (and quickest!)?

 

The actual error message that I receive is:

Component 'Msinet.ocx' or one of its dependencies not currently registered: a file is missing or invalid

After some messing about with the OCX registration for Flash, I now get Run-time error '70': Permission denied.

 

This software is starting to annoy me! I have tried giving all users full permissions to the software folder too.

Ric, have you tried giving their support people a call? They are very helpfull !!!!

@e_g_r: Spoken to them and they are at a bit of a loss. The reply I got was, "The Microsoft website says that it's probably something to do with DCOM but I'm not sure what... I'll get back to you."

 

We'll have to see what happens!

@tosca: It's me having the prob... the manual registering fixed that prob and meant I got the eprmisions prob. Cr*ppy software

Is this exambase v5.0 by any chance? We had to do this last year for our MFL and the client didn't run correctly. By this i mean that it didn't work under normal users, however it will work under administrator.

 

We spoke their tech support and they advised that this is known problem and that they are working on it. They couldn't sort this our in time and they sent the exams on CDs.

 

I don't know if they have managed to fix this now but probably unlikely.

Sorry guys, you use the same avatar................It had been along day, bloody DLink access points been playing up and the mobiles have had no connection.

 

We've installed this this year only for Literacy and Numeracy and we've had no problems whatsover with it running.

 

@Ric, i was going to offer you a script that registers ocx files on start up, but i guess you dont need it now...............lol

@tosca: I think your eyes are playing tricks on you... those avatars are very different (mine is better )

 

That script would be handy as I need to run it on the other remaining 5 terminal servers and it will save me a minute or two.

 

Indeed, it is the Literacy and Numeracy tests and the software does run as domain admin but I aint allowing kids near a PC that has that level of access.

I replied to the post in a hurry just before i left today. I agree my eyes must have been playing tricks..............!

 

We installed manually on tot he workstations and have had no problems with the permissions, not sure why we seem to have been so lucky with it?

 

 

for the script mentioned before, paste the text below in to notepad and save with a vbs extension.

Has anyone had issues with the Exambase server failing to download candidates?

 

It fails to download, then prompts me to enter the proxy (which is already set in IE and correct) and then fails again with "The underlying connection was closed: unable to connect to the remote server"

 

If I give the server an IP that can get straight out (no LEA firewall restrictions), it fails with exactly the same error.

 

I'm now resorting to Ethereal to work out why it's breaking and

 

edit: the proxy I'm using doesn't require authentication, so it's not that.

 

Ethereal shows nothing interesting

We used this last year for maths. Again, no problems that I can remember.

OK, fixed it. The trick (in embc) is that if you set a proxy in IE it doesn't work, but will happily prompt you to enter your proxy settings when it fails to connect, even though you don't need to set one.

Yeah, I mean the downloads from Internet to the server, not the client - the client worked fine and couldn't care less about proxies. The servers error messages were "unintuitive" to the point where I was hoping for a "remotely stab the developer" option hidden somewhere.

I had no problems running this before, but I've come to do it again and now I'm getting the problem where the Server Software is saying I need to enter a proxy but nothing I put in works.

 

It used to work this is what I don't understand!

Delete the file in the Exambase program directory called myproxy.xml (or similar) and remove any* proxy settings from Internet explorer.

 

Then make it connect again. This worked for me using any IP address, ymwocv

 

*even if you'd normally need them.

I ended up restarting and that's sorted it. Thankyou thought I'll bear it in mind.

I've just had to re-install the client on another two boxes and I cannot for the life of me remember how I fixed the problem

 

I didn't happen to mention to anyone how I fixed the problem?
