indiegirl Posted May 4, 2006 Posted May 4, 2006 ... and exercised my Union's advice to refuse to work in my office. I have moved my PC out of the office (31 degrees atm) into the classroom next to the office door. I have then sent an email to my Personnel Officer, stating why I have moved (politely) and outlining the contraventions of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992. I got an almost instant reply, stating that she understood (yes, we know she understands, let's see something done about it) and that our line manager has had to meet with the assistant head to discuss office shuffles. I doubt we'll move at all, but it's raised the issue properly and without doing anything untoward...

indiegirl Posted May 4, 2006 Author Posted May 4, 2006 Whichever one trumps which doesn't bother me...!! I guess it might make the powers that be move quicker... the fact is that H&S trumps DPA means that I can't go back in the office... and the DPA means that I can't stay in the classroom. Dear oh dear... they'll have to find me somewhere and quick then, won't they?! ;-) (I am an awkward one, sometimes)
russdev Posted May 4, 2006 Posted May 4, 2006 sorry moved this by accident moved back to correct place i think russ
indiegirl Posted May 4, 2006 Author Posted May 4, 2006 It's showing in 'Fun Stuff - Other Stuff'... You can leave it wherever (I decided that a 'general chat' was worthy of it as it's work-related but not really helpful!) Although I could post the Working Regs that it contravenes to help others.. ;-) We have fans blasting, air con on full... still 31 at the mo and rising.. they will learn the hard way....
NetworkGeezer Posted May 4, 2006 Posted May 4, 2006 Has the NM said anything or is it assumed because he has had a holdiday in India he should have acclimatised to the heat
webman Posted May 4, 2006 Posted May 4, 2006 Don't hold your breath lol After we complained the temperature was too hot in here (same as yours) we got this built (aka. The Cage) in the middle of a classroom. Not big enough for 2 people to work effectively. So we didn't use it. Then, when I was forced into my job role of Web/VLE Manager, guess who got moved from our hot office into the cage? Muggins here. (Apparently, a Web/VLE Manager can't work in an office that has an ICT Support plaque on the door ) Good luck with them finding an office for you

indiegirl Posted May 4, 2006 Author Posted May 4, 2006 The NM's chickened out of joining me (he says it's because he isn't in a Union), but is happy to tell everyone about my move... he's run around this morning shouting "Citizen J****" (his surname) and asking people to "support our cause". Hmmm. He's making a bigger thing of it than I am... To be perfectly honest, I'd not mind being Dilbert-ised like you are Craig, anything to get out of the cupboard!

But working in the middle of a classroom, for 6x 50min periods during the day with the noise of the teacher, let alone the kids is no fun; I have the sound clips to prove it. Earplugs are essential but not convenient. 8O
Simcfc73 Posted May 4, 2006 Posted May 4, 2006 It amazed me when I was working at a state school a few years ago. They would happily spend £50,000 buying projectors and whiteboards that no one would want but would quibble over £50 for a new motherboard. Thank god I've gone private and have got my own budget.

broc Posted May 4, 2006 Posted May 4, 2006 I managed to negotiate a 1st floor room with a sea view(just), and air conditioning, it's 8 metres square and I share it with a technician, our servers, stores, and workbenches. Much better than the converted ex-girls toilet we used to have as an office! I bet we don't have as much space post-BSF.
pete Posted May 4, 2006 Posted May 4, 2006 @ Indiegirl Good for you. Talk to Ken at ACS ( http://www.acs-airconditioning.co.uk/ ) so you can provide the solution when this goes up the chain to SMT. (no, I don't get kickbacks, but we have used him for all our air-con and he's very good).
