Images fo staff on Facebook

I'll write this slightly cryptically but hopefully the message should be the same,

 

An event was organised as a fundraiser at a school, pictures were taken of some staff taking part. Pictures were taken inside the school building and have been 'pblished' on Facebook.

 

The member of staff, fortunatly, has decent privacy settings so only 'Friends' can view the pictures and comments.

 

The one issue is that many of the staff are completly unaware that there images exist on Facebook.

 

The second issue is that one member of staff has a lot of ex-pupils as friends.

 

Third issue, some of the comments or discussion specifically name students at the school, so innapropriate comments are being made.

 

Whats does everyone think, The head at the school woud not have published these images to the school website.

 

Although privacy settings in Facebook have been set well, any friend can view these images of any friend that can view said teachers profile.

Hi. I can't find it at the moment but both NUT and NASUWT have advice on their websites about how teachers should be using social networking sites. May be worth a look there. Edited November 16, 2008 by jcollings

Id love to find the links, had a quick google and a rummage through there websites but cant find much?

At my last place we were always told that we must not use them and "become friends" with any current student, but former students that had left were ok and IMHO if they changed that then there being a bit hypocritical to say they run there own Facebook group for the former students and its run by current school staff!

 

We also must not put any photos up on our profiles if students were in them, even if the student(s) were left untagged, which was fine, most staff just put photos up after they had left the school such as leavers celebrations etc were the most common reason for having student photos on profiles as its you with your tutee's or form group, class, sport team etc
