Help!!!

 

The bursars hard drive has failed, I've installed a new one, but I can't seem to get FMS (or SIMS for that matter) working

 

Does anyone know how to install it please!

ok. on the bursar's machine you need to map a drive to the drive with the sims stuff on, then dig down to sims>setups>simsinst.exe (it's a funny blue icon like an inverted comma) get this started and just follow the default instructions/steps. it'll need to reboot during this operation. once rebooted start sims and log in. at this point a window will open asking for the connect.ini file. you'll have 2 choices so go with the top one and browse to the sims folder where you should find it, select connect.ini and, apart from any updates, that should be it. I'll keep an eye on this post to see if you need any more help

There may be a connect.ini on your local machine, but you probably want the connect.ini on your network drive (in our case it's at s:\sims\connect.ini).

 

The most reliable way of installing FMS is from your most recent CD then doing an update by running fmsload. Post again if you get stuck at that point as it seems there are a few bugs (surely not!).

thanks sahmeepee, I didn't make my point clearly there. if you're on a network then you should use the connect.ini on the sims server/drive

Thanks for the help so far chaps. I've managed to install SIMS, but the finance package isn't there. Am I missing something?

and think yourself lucky your not installing the old SIMS..........remember having to manually alter the autoexec.bat and config.sys files and hacking the registry for every workstation.....remembering which IDs had been used already etc........!!!!

 

Sims.net is a P.O.P. in comparison!!

Finance isnt in the source you have to install it off a CD usually unless someone else has copied it on.

The bursar says that we don't have a CD, it comes from something called Solus

that's Sims On Line Update Service, or something similar. I'm afraid I can't help you with the finance package though.

I installed (or rather upgraded) FMS the last time. I had a CD (and instructions!) from our local friendly SIMS support guys

I know the upgrades are available through solus.

FMS packages may be available on your server at \\servername\sims\setups (or similar). This is where solus usually dumps them.

 

You'll have to make sure that the version of the client you install is the version the database expects or it may get ... interesting. Is there another install of FMS anywhere / notes of what version.

I've spoken to the help desk, and they say I need a copy of the cd in order to reinstall. I'll have to wait for that, unless anyones got an iso???

FMS is a separate package from Sims.net which integrates with SIMS. Who loaded it on originally? If not yourselves then you won`t have the CD so will need to get in touch with Capita support for a copy.

If you're under pressure, you could always try running the fmssetup.exe from your sims\setups folder, but my experience with that method has been bad (maybe try it out on a spare PC first). If it does go on OK, find and run fmsload next to get your fms version up-to-date.

tried that, didn't work! I keep getting an error about the Borland database not being installed

I've just done this - you need to run the setup.exe thats in the same folder as the fmssetup. The confusing bit is where you have to tell it the location of the database files - as the server see's them.

 

We usually have faffiong around with permissions and IP connectivity too.

Ah, FMS, what fun. Pity it uses its own sql database unlike the rest of sims.net (except personel which is still on the dbase files!). Sims.net was supposed to make things integrated and easier. Now I have to make sure 5 systems are running!

we have a copy of the last cd that capita sent out on the server maybe someone has done the same, what you have to do now that the latest FMS upgrade came through solus i dont know. as usual the documentation never made it to us in IT
