Label Printing in Libraries

Our librarian is once again getting on to me about a new printer. She had had one new one and two refurbed ones and they all finish up jamming.

 

As it's the only place in the school where this has happened I can only think that the reason is label printing. She says she has stopped puttting through label sheets that have already had some labels removed, but once again the printer is jamming.

 

This raises a number of questions about what do your libraries do about label printing do you:

- use A4 label sheets

- use standard printers

- use label printers (if so what types)

- have any other options

I'm an ICT Tech cum librarian.

 

I use A4 sheets through our OKI colour and mono lasers without problem.

 

At home I stick labels through both my HP laser and Canon inkjet again without problem.

 

Two rules though:

 

1. Don't try to re-use the A4 sheet if some labels weren't printed the first time. It's a recipe for disaster. The labels may print Ok, but sometimes it seems like the adhesive oozes on an incomplete sheet

 

2. Make sure the labels are compatible with the printer. Laser labels for laser and inkjet labels for the inkjet. There are plenty of problems that can be caused by getting this wrong!

I assume that the labels are for the book barcodes... our librarians buy pre-printed sheets of labels.

Our librarian has a really cheap HP inkjet printer for label printing, as I've seen too many printers ruined by labels. So far this has been ok, but if it gets jammed up and ruined because it only cost £40, we'll just buy a new one for her and throw the old one out. Not very green admitedly.

We use a network attached photocopier with stack bypass so labels go straight through without bending round rollers,Also for one off labels we use brother ql-550 (ebay for £70 new) we have one on every admin computer saves so much hassle with jammed printers.

We have a large hp colour laser that handles all of our label. Just use standard laser A4 sheets and only feed them though once (print out at least half a page worth at a time). Never have any issues with jamming or binding up.
