HodgeHi Posted October 17, 2008 Posted October 17, 2008 Hello, I am trying to backup data on the XRAID in OS X Server 10.5.5. I have tried Rysnc X to backup a rotational set of Data but it seems to fail miserably when doing so. The app seems a bit buggy as well on Leopard since even the modify button on the scheduled scripts doesn't work. So my question of how do you back up the data incrementally in OS X still stands. What do you use to do the job? (simpler and freer = )

HodgeHi Posted October 17, 2008 Author Posted October 17, 2008 I haven't tried time machine but to be honest, i'm not sure if i trust it enough. I have never used it but have heard a few stories of data being lost due to time machines failures. I suppose i could try it out for a bit. It's better than what i have at the moment. tim.dalton Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 We use rsync a fair bit with no problems at all. Think the problem is with the app rather than the command. I've used Rsync X a couple of times recently & it does seem to be a little buggy- some of the options just don't work on 10.5. I played around a bit- took out a few things & came up with a script that worked for a simple manual home directory backup for some staff laptops. I'm certainly not good enough with rsync to be able to come up with the command you need confidently, but work with a guy who is. If you send me a private message or similar I'll pass on the contact. DMcCoy Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 Does rsync support resource forks though? I know from 10.4 on that cp and tar do. I have been using bru to backup on OS X, although it produces a long list of errors during backup on 10.5, it does actually backup everything successfully (it states the error messages will be fixed in the next release). There hasn't been very much movement on an updated release though. Speed is ok and it's a darn sight better than the awful Retrospect I had before.
