I came across this last night, thought it might be of use to some people.

 

I have tested it and it seems ok, easy enough to use so should not be hard for non techie people to make use of it.

Folder Password Expert USB seems like what you are looking for. You install it on a USB stick and protect folders that you do not want to get into the wrong hands. The program is not free but comes with free upgardes. A license is priced at $39.95 but they give it away for a link, review, translation, etc.

Sorry to bump up the old thread. Was looking for help to protect my folders and files and landed here. Well in my opinion you can either go for TrueCrypt or for Protect a Folder, its a less than 1 MB tool which can easily protect portable drives.
