IE Proxy Problems

Hi all,

 

We are having a problem with random users and IE. For some of our staff IE works as it should but for others it wont display the first web page they try to load (can be any link to any site) but once its failed to connect a refresh makes it work a treat!

 

Our proxy settings are set through GPO and the same policy for all staff so I have ruled that one out and I have tried giving a new profile to the staff with the problem, still nothing. Once the page is refreshed, open a second instance of IE or the user browses to another site IE starts behaving normally.

 

I gave a staff account Admin rights for a test and went control panel -> Internet options (before trying any pages) and all the proxy details were correct but desktop website still failed to load. Once i clicked OK on Internet properties (having changed nothing) desktop wallpaper loaded and everything worked as it should.

 

Any tips or ideas would be appreciated

It does sound like a profile related problem. Although you've allocated new profiles to the affected users, have you also deleted locally cached profiles within the C:\Documents and Settings directory?

 

Using a utility like Delprof is useful for tasks like this.

Hi Michael,

 

I have deleted the local profile in C:\documen... and double checked in user profiles in system properties and made sure they have gone but still nothing. Starting to get frustrated now ...

 

I cant see a pattern to users that work and ones that don't. All students appear to work (not had any complaints but it would mean they had to try to work to find out!) and about half the staff regardless of what version of IE they run, what workstation they are on, department etc and as i say all have the same GPO's applied.

When allocating a new profile, do you give it the same name? Try putting a 1 on the end and adjust the profile path in AD so it also has a 1 on the end.

 

What versions of IE are you using? Any reason for not having the same version throughout?

Thanks for the suggestion, I will try that out now.

 

The only reason we have got a few computers still using IE 6 is that we have still a few left to image, will have to be at half term now though. The majority are using IE7

I have even given a staff account a student profile and still nothing, first page fails to load

 

Any other ideas? i'm all out!

Can you verify the workstation is correctly picking up an IP, gateway and primary DNS ok?

 

Open up a command prompt and type: ipconfig /all

I had this problem and had to update adms in group policy. That fixed most of them but not all I finally had to set proxy with a logon script setting registry settings.

 

Copy this into a file called proxy.reg

 

REGEDIT4

 

 

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]

"ProxyServer"="server:8080"

"ProxyEnable"=dword:00000001

"ProxyOverride"="server1;server2;test;"

 

Now edit the file and place it your netlogon.

 

Create a file called proxy.bat

 

Paste this in

 

regedit.exe /s \\network path\proxy.reg

 

Now run this script in a script under user in your gpo.

 

Please note that you might have to change a gpo setting to allow the user to be able to change this registry key.

Surely this would be an indication GPOs are not being applied?

How would i go about updating the adm files?

OK i read that to update ADM files i need to install gpmsc on a XP machine and edit a GPO to update the adm. i did this on my machine and now i get the same problem as everyone else! does this give anyone any ideas as to whats going on?

Make sure your using the IE7 ADM templates and update every machine to IE7 (roll it out with WSUS or something)

 

Had the same problem here not long ago when we first started rolling out IE7

 

Also do you use the "preference mode" bit under IE settings? not sure 100% what it does but it gives you a few more settings to play with

Try another workstation, we had the same thing on one for two of ours.
