Little-Miss Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Has anyone else had an Elenox PC catch fire? I've got 2 here, both marked by previous technician as overheating, so i've plugged them in to see which part was the problem. Thing is they both almost caught fire in the same place. Lots of smoke a glowing orange! The scorch marks are on the cable running from the floppy to the motherboard. Can't tell you what model it is. Just a slim black Workstation. Bit scary though as there are still a few in the classrooms! 3
Michael Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 If anything glows orange it's usually the PSU. You need to get rid of these immediately and I would also inform your health and safety officer that there are a few still in use around school.
craiglay Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Erm, I have loads of these around.. Thanks for the heads up! Had a few cut out due to overheating but nothing that drastic. Craig
tmcd35 Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 The white Prosentia 1000 models? If so, we've had a couple of PSU's do that in the past.
FragglePete Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Oh God, I've still got a load of the Prosentia 1000's in use. Upgrade some over summer with more memory and noticed the CPU Cooling Fins were completely clogged with, well, err.... 'stuff'. Scared now. Pete
plexer Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 The black ones are newer than the old white prosentias. I have a white prosentia here running 24/7 as my network monitoring servers maybe I need a network smoke alarm too. Ben
dhicks Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Has anyone else had an Elenox PC catch fire? Now you mention it, yes. One of the older white case models. It was a second hand machine, mind, and it had been kicking around the PE store for a while, so we couldn't really grumble. -- David Hicks
Little-Miss Posted October 8, 2008 Author Posted October 8, 2008 It's scary. All i did was plug it in. Glowing didn't come from PSU.cable2.BMP
Little-Miss Posted October 8, 2008 Author Posted October 8, 2008 Mine are slim Black prosentia machines..
button_ripple Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Thanks for the tip off, I know a school with a few of these!
tmcd35 Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 We had around 80 of the Pro 1000's (white), about 30 still left in circulation. Only 2 have had this problem. Although many have died for other reasons. The pro 800's (black), which we also have quite a number, seem to be a tad (only a tad) more reliable. No wonder Elonex went bust with quality like this. I wonder if the resurrected Elonex is any better?
