Checking for Bluetooth & wireless activity in school

As more and more students have mobile phones which support bluetooth we are finding they are using them to share images etc in school. This, coupled with the recent report about phones being used to cheat in exams made me wonder if we should be monitoring the 'airwaves' for unauthorised bluetooth and wireless activity in school.

 

Is anyone doing this, or has anyone any ideas about what tools/software we might need to be able to check? Ideally I would want something passive.

You can use something like netstumbler on a laptop or WiFiFoFum on a PDA to detect wireless gear.

WiFi isn't really a problem to track as ChrisH says.

 

Bluetooth is hard to track down though due to the limited ranges. Generally what happens here is that students aren't allowed to take anything other than a clear pencil case into an exam.

Same here but I read an article about 12 months ago of a kid who was found to be sitting outside a classroom with a laptop - it turned out he was sending answers to his mates LCD watch.

I use my nice freebie from Bett from the nice lady at Netgear, its great as kids never encrypt the networks.
