ADSL & Cordless Phones

I wish I could just say no when young, single female members of staff ask me to go round to their place and help them set up their new broadband or whatever....

 

Anyway, said young lady has just registered with Orange BB and the kit arrived today. I went round tonight and set it all up. BB works perfectly.

 

But, it doesn't like her old BT Freelance 100 cordless phone.

 

FREELANCE 100 & 200

 

The supplied filters are tested and in place (only two phone sockets - one for the phone and one for the PC). The BB works fine, but the moment the cordless phone is turned on to either make or accept a call it knocks off the BB which doesn't come back on until the handset is switched off.

 

Fortunately, she had two old telephone handsets that I could use to test the setup - which both worked perfectly when connected instead of the BT Freelance 100. So this confirmed the BT Freelance 100 was the problem.

 

I've heard before that cordless phones can do this. With this model the base unit transmits 1.7Mhz signals from the loose wire aerial to the ferrite aerial inside the handset and the handset transmits 47Mhz signals from the telescopic aerial to the base unit telescopic aerial.

 

I know that it was recommended that this phone be used with an RFI filter as a place I used to work at had them on their PBX. Is this an issue?

 

I told her she needs to replace this ageing phone but she 'likes it' and wants it to work......d'oh.

Same problem at home for me, I have 3 iDect phones (bought about 2 months ago). When the phone is picked up from the main base station it kills my BB, the sync drops.... I keep meaning to hunt around for a filter that will stop this but hey ho, haven't got around to it..

Is base station plugged into bb filter have you tried putting it on one off the extensions.BT recently where telling me about interference from electrical devices like power supplies, florescent tubes and free view boxes knocking out broadband up to 150mtrs away.

 

I am writting this on my tablet pc using bluetooth to my mobile to provide internet as we have a bl**dy power cut.

Try calling up BT and asking for a line gain boost. My phone is really hissy/crackly with the ADSL running, and I've tried 4 different ADSL filters. If the line power is low, possibly it can't cope too well.

 

it should be a free upgrade..they've never charged me for it.

I put two filters in tandem on the phone and it now works! Picked this tip up off thinkbroadband.com

 

I've also ordered some high quality filters from ADSL Nation - XF-1e - Professional Microfilter - rather impressed with this company as I ordered them yesterday lunchtime and they arrived today (Saturday) and postage was only £1.50 + vat!

 

I'm going to test them today and see if they do make a difference.
