cookie_monster Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 We're having an occasional issue where a student turns off a thin client device then when they turn it back on it's starting a new session rather than connecting to the old session. Is there a setting that will make them connect to the old session? Thanks.
Oops_my_bad Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 Is their old session still running when they start a new one up?
cookie_monster Posted September 19, 2008 Author Posted September 19, 2008 I think i've got this sorted now, i've made the desktop only available once to each user. The only problem now is that sometimes if they turn off a thin client device and move to another one they can't connect straight away but then sometimes it just reconnect straight to the open session
Oops_my_bad Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Yes it's a difficult balance to strike - I have set the "1 session per user option" in XenApp console and set the session timeout to 180 seconds. As long as they wait 3+ minutes to reconnect they're fine
cookie_monster Posted September 19, 2008 Author Posted September 19, 2008 Ok in the farm settings i've limited users to 1 session, if i set the session timeout to 180 seconds does that mean that any users session is given the boot after 3 mins. If so do you have issues with staff loosing work? Cheers.
Oops_my_bad Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 I'm not sure how it works but it knows the difference between a "Live" session and a session that has been "disconnected" (ie turning the thin client off) Even if you're idle for 3 minutes it wont kick you out because it knows you are still there I think it must just ping the client or something, not sure how it would handle web interface sessions in this manner though.
cookie_monster Posted September 19, 2008 Author Posted September 19, 2008 Ah ok so you have disconnected sessions set to 3 mins but idle sessions set higher?
Oops_my_bad Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Oh, and I beleive if they reconnect within the 180 seconds it takes them back to their original session. 1
cookie_monster Posted September 19, 2008 Author Posted September 19, 2008 This is the problem that i've been having when they click connect it launches the logon box as the first server to respond, if it's the server with the open session then it connects but if it's another server they're told that they have too many connections to the farm. Sometimes repeated tries brings up the right server (we only have 2) but if we had a few they would probably have to wait to be disconnected and loose their work.
cookie_monster Posted September 22, 2008 Author Posted September 22, 2008 Can i also just ask, do you have the windows image acquisition service enabled on your citrix boxes? I keep getting red DCOM event 10010 id's in the system log as something tries to start the service but it's disabled by default on 2003 server.
Oops_my_bad Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 I havent enabled the other farm servers yet - we still have the one server doing most of the stuff at the mo. What edition of citrix are you running? Re Windows Image acquisition service: Ours is set to manual and seems to stop and start as and when needed. I don't see any of those errors being logged but we are running xenapp 5 and 2008
cookie_monster Posted September 22, 2008 Author Posted September 22, 2008 We're running 4.5 on 2003 server the service is disabled by default so there must be an app trying to use it, i've set it to manual so we'll see what happens.
Oops_my_bad Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 what "edition" of citrix are you running? Ie enterprise, platinum etc.. I'm thinking the "reconnect session" (no matter which server) is something that might only be available in the more expensive editions
cookie_monster Posted September 24, 2008 Author Posted September 24, 2008 The licence server says 'Citrix XenApp (Presentation Server) Enterprise'
