Convert DVD to AVI or MPEG or something

How can I convert a DVD to a format thats editable in Windows Movie Maker?

Presumably this can only be done legally with a 'home-made' DVD, in which case you would have the source material - unless it was from a DVD-R deck, but then you're not allowed to keep TV recordings anyway.

 

Not judging what anyone wants to do, but just curious about the answer that that question.

If it's from the BBC or Channel 4 you are if it's for educational purposes

 

One of our local school even got permission to digitize them for staff to use on their white boards
