SIMS Server 2019 and SQL 2016 EOL

So a few weeks away from SQL 2016 EOL and planning to upgrade maybe this weekend see how i am feeling lol!

 

i got a plan of a few steps and wanted to know if you guys have any suggestions?

1. Change SQL Compatibility Level from 2012 (110) to 2016 (130)
2. Install latest SQL provided from SIMS Docs and then attach
3. inplace upgrade server to 2025 - (yes i done many times works a treat!)

i cant really find any documentation recent as that wasnt long ago.

When we rebuilt ours (July 2023) Windows 2019 and SQL 2019 where latest supported versions, snippet from Notes at time

 

The Server must be no higher than SIMS Server 2019 and the SQL Media must be SQL2016 SP3 (IF SIMS is on V7.208, Autumn 2022) or SQL2019 (If you have SIMS upgraded to V7.210 Spring 2023).  

 

    SQL Express - CANNOT be used as a database server, IF the database size exceeds 10gb, and is not recommended if any of the following are true:     

          • Number of users is greater than twenty  

          • School intends to make extensive use of InTouch

          • The customer wishes to take advantage of database servers that have more than one CPU or more than four cores    

    .net framework 3.5 and 4.7

Just a quick update guys, got way too carried away lol!

 

Of course backups but i have realsied that SQL 2022 was already installed so went and changed the database compatibility to 2022. so far so good with testing and seems smooth.

I have then updated to server 2025 in place upgrade and has worked fine.

 

I would first recommend having DCs on 2025 first though as they requires a few infrastructure changes like mentioned on the other threads.

 

Got staff coming in today inset so only support staff so any issues easy to rollback.

It's still recommended to use 2012 compatibility by ParentPay if you check their migration docs (At least up to September last year when I was did one)
